Chi O Marathoners

This past weekend, several Chi Omegas ran the St. Louis half marathon! All of their hard training paid off when they woke up early in the morning to complete the long run!

Sam Legler is stretched and ready to go!

Two freshmen Chi Omegas found their Delta Gamma friends and took the time to pose for a picture before the long race.

Brooke Clausen and Katherine Weider show off their medals after crossing the finish line!

We are so proud of all of these girls’ dedication and effort- great job!

Chi Omega Hits the Beach!

After 2 months of attending class, trudging through the snow, studying into the late hours of the night, meeting with steering committees, what two words have every Chi O jumping for joy?

SPRING BREAK!

Some members traveled home to spend some time with family and friends, but lots of girls went to the beach! Whether it was Mexico, Texas, or Florida, all Chi Os found plenty of sun, sand, and surf.

Road trips with your sisters are always fun- especially with plenty of snacks and music!

On their way down to Florida, four members of the freshmen pledge class stopped by Chi Omega National Headquarters in Memphis, TN.

During the day, we relaxed by laying or playing on the beach.

At night, Spring Break offered lots of opportunities to dress up and have fun out in a new town!

Our Merchandise Chair, Alexis Lucente, designed adorable oversized tanks for the entire chapter just in time for Spring Break.

A Picniked photo by junior member Heather Trumpfheller sums up how we feel about our Chi Omega sisterhood:

Peace, love, and Chi O became our unofficial motto.

Now, we are all back at school, and it’s time to hit the books again. However, a week on the beach with our Chi Omega sisters was the perfect break to recharge, relax, and get ready for the few short weeks ahead until finals begin.

We Belong, We Belong Together (Formal 2010)

This past weekend, Chi Omegas all decided to go out, high heels, teased hair, strapless dresses and all, in a late March blizzard! Why? Well, we couldn’t miss our annual White Carnation formal!

Named for the official flower of Chi Omega, White Carnation is Rho Alpha’s most formal social event of the year.

Though the slushy snow that fell from the sky all day and night may suggest something different, White Carnation was held the weekend before Spring Break, so everyone was already in a great mood looking forward to the week ahead!

Some Chi Os began the night with a fancy dinner before catching the bus (deemed safe by our house mom and trusty driver, despite the weather conditions) to the dance!

This year, White Carnation was held at the fancy Tiger Hotel in downtown Columbia to pair with the ritzy attire everyone wore.

Rho Alphas had so much fun dancing and singing all night long with their sisters and dates. Senior Gina Kuntz’s boyfriend Tony was even crowned our White Carnation king- congrats!

A big thank you goes out to our social chairs for planning such a great event! We are already looking forward to our next social!

XΩ Mom’s Weekend 2010

This past weekend the members of the Rho Alpha chapter invited their mothers to come and visit for our annual Mom’s Weekend! Our social chair planned so many awesome activities that allowed everyone to have fun, catch up, and even make some new friends!

On Friday, after our moms either drove in from as close as Jefferson City or flew from as far as Vancouver, Washington, many girls opted to go out to dinner with their moms before meeting up with everyone at a local comedy club, Deja Vu.

Chi Os and their moms laughed all night at funny comedians, including some openers from the University of Missouri and a very funny dancing comedian. He even invited our social chair and her mom up onto the stage to perform a dance with him at the end of the show.

The next day began with a private pilates class at the recreation center taught by one of our members, Emily Milford. Girls had so much fun working out with their moms!

Saturday also happened to be Mizzou’s big rivalry basketball game against the Kansas Jayhawks. Chi Omega rented out the back room of a popular restaurant in Columbia and held a huge watch party to cheer on the Tigers!

That night, a local pottery studio called The Mud Room stayed open late just for Chi Omegas and their moms to stop in and create some fun pottery! Everyone loved sculpting and painting anything from owl bowls (Chi Omega’s symbol), to Mizzou plates, to Mom’s Weekend picture frames.

Mom’s Weekend came to an end the next morning with a brunch at the house, complete with some shopping! Chi Omega arranged for some vendors to bring in their wares and set up shop in the house. Girls and their moms were able to peruse designer jeans, Chi Omega Creations, and other stylish apparel after enjoying a delicious brunch in the kitchen.

We Rho Alpha girls will always love our moms, and it’s so great to be able to spend such a fantastic weekend with them. Thanks again to our social chair for planning all of the amazing activities!

Bonnie Thomas Chosen for Mizzou ’39!

Chi Omega is so lucky to have seniors who not only make a difference in our Rho Alpha chapter, but also in the campus community as well! Each year, the Mizzou Alumni Association Student Board recognizes 39 outstanding seniors (the “Mizzou ’39“) known for their academic achievement, leadership, and service to the university and community. Our very own Bonnie Thomas, a broadcast journalism and sociology major from Phoenix, Arizona, was selected to be one of these 39 amazing seniors!

Bonnie (left), has been a great member of Chi Omega for four years. As a broadcast journalism major, she works as an anchor, reporter and Web editor at KOMU-TV, the local Columbia NBC affiliate station.

The Mizzou ’39 recipients were honored at a special ceremony, reception, and banquet, and then had the privilege of walking out on the Mizzou Arena floor at halftime of the MU-Colorado basketball game (Bonnie is third from the left in the closer picture).

All of the Mizzou ’39 honorees have made such an impact on the campus and the Columbia community- congratulations to all!

We are so proud of Bonnie! She has accomplished so much in her life already (below she is pictured as a Top 10 Homecoming Royalty candidate). We can’t wait to see what the future holds for such an amazing girl!

Chi Omegas Chosen for Pi Chis and Homecoming Steering Committee!

Chi Omega is especially honored to have seven of our members be selected to be Pi Chis for Recruitment 2010! Congrats to Allison Alder, Maria Civitate, Kasey Holdinghausen, Maggie Miller, Maggie Gengler, Cait Bandel, and Emily Moon. These girls will disaffiliate from Chi Omega and lead potential members through the recruitment process this fall. This will be such a fun and rewarding experience for them!

Two of the above girls, Cait Bandel and Emily Moon, were also named to the 2010 Homecoming Steering Committee! Mizzou’s Homecoming is the first and best homecoming in the country, with the nation’s largest blood drive, house decorations, and a community parade. They will plan every aspect of our homecoming celebration in the fall, and we couldn’t be more proud!

Three Chi Os Chosen for GAMMA Steering Committee!

GAMMA (Greeks Advocating the Mature Management of Alcohol) is an annual competition in the fall. In 2009, the Greek community raised thousands of dollars and served many hours of community service for the McCambridge Center. Molly Heitmann, Jacquie Kasner, and Kacie Yearout will continue the tradition of a successful event by serving on the 2010 GAMMA Steering Committee! Great job, girls!

Congratulations to four freshmen, Kacie Yearout, Stephanie Nagel, Sammi Birely, and Nina Bolka for making Outreach Student Recruitment Team! These girls will be responsible for recruiting prospective students for MU by running the Black & Gold and Meet Mizzou Days for high school students- what an awesome opportunity!

Chi Omegas “Polar Plunge” for Special Olympics!

This past weekend was the annual Polar Plunge, held all across the country to support the Special Olympics. Participants form teams, raise money, and then jump in a lake in the middle of winter! This year, 12 Chi Os braved the elements to jump into Stephens Lake here in Columbia, some complete with costumes.

The Polar Plunge hosted a Greek Challenge, which gave a free bus pass for the Spring semester to the sorority or fraternity that raised the most money. Chi Omega won this Greek Challenge, beating all other houses with a total of $1,060 in fundraising! Awesome job girls!

According to Polar Plunge officials, the air temperature was 34 degrees, and the water temperature was even chillier, at 24 degrees. Brrr!

Our reward at the end? Lots of hot chocolate, the satisfaction of helping out a great cause, and a pretty sweet sweatshirt!

Overall, 360 plungers participated in this event, raising over $60,000. Now that’s what I call freezin’ for a reason! Chi Omega is so proud to be a part of such a great fundraiser!

Emily Cottingham Chosen as Summer Welcome Leader!

One of Chi Omega’s own was selected to serve as a Summer Welcome leader this summer- Emily Cottingham! Summer Welcome (SW) is a recurring event all summer that incoming freshmen attend in order to get acquainted with Mizzou. SW leaders run the orientation process, facilitate games and sessions to help students adjust to college life, and even act in an elaborate skit called “Revue” each night! The selection process is extremely selective, and we couldn’t be prouder of Emily for being picked from hundreds of worthy candidates. Congratulations!
